Precaution
Mupicin ointment is not intended for ophthalmic or intranasal use. If signs of sensitivity or chemical irritation occur during its use, treatment should be discontinued, and an appropriate alternative therapy should be initiated. Like other antibacterial products, prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Care should be taken to avoid contact with the eyes when applying Mupicin ointment on the face. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), a component of the ointment, can be absorbed from open wounds and damaged skin and it is excreted by the kidneys. Therefore, Mupicin ointment, like other PEG-based ointments, should not be used in situations where large quantities of PEG might be absorbed, particularly in individuals with moderate or severe renal impairment.
Drug Interaction
The effect of using Mupirocin alongside other drugs has not been studied.
Use Children
Use of the ointment in 2 months to 16 years age groups is supported by evidence from adequate and well-controlled studies of Mupicin ointment in impetigo in pediatric patients.
Use Pregnancy Lactation
The drug is classified in pregnancy category-B. Animal studies are not always predictive of human response. So, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. As many drugs are excreted in woman’s milk, caution should be exercised when Mupicin ointment is used to a lactating woman.
